Burmese Cat Breed
Burmese Cat
American Burmese has a slightly different appearance from the European Burmese. The American standard emphasizes the roundness of the forms, particularly the head.

Modern round-headed Burmese cats appeared in the 1970s. Right away, the cats of this breed were often born with a defect of the head (skull deformity). This skull defect is often fatal or requires an euthanasia.

Burmese breed originates from the brown cat called Wong Mau, which was brought from Rangoon in Myanmar (Burma) to US by naval psychiatrist Joseph Thompson. And on the US soil, Wong Mau was crossed with a Siamese cat. As a result an adorable kittens of a new breed were born.

Appearance:

The only colour that was officially recognized by feline associations at the end of the 80s was black. But the extensive breeding brought out more colours, which achieved recognition over the next few decades. As of right now, the official colours for Burmese breed are black, blue and platinum (called lavender in some countries).

Burmese cats have medium sized body, muscular and compact. Tight fur, short and thin, glossy, with a silky texture. They have rounded heads, full cheeks, wide muzzle which is also rather short and a rounded chin. Their eyes are round and large, vividly yellow. Medium sized ears with rounded tips, set wide apart and slightly tilted forward.

Character:

Burmese cats are agile and playful, they will be immensely happy if they will have a friend in the house, with whom they can thoroughly frolic. They are happy to potter with children, and can play "catch-up" with other pets (even with dogs). Burmese cats remain playful and active up to a very old age, and it seems that the older the cats the more enthusiastically they play. It is a pleasure to watch them play.

Burmese cats are not afraid of guests, will sniff the stranger, and most likely climb on their lap, but not for long. They simply don't have time for sitting around. But as soon as guests are going to leave, Burmese cats will come to say goodbye.

American Burmese cats have an excellent appetite. They love cheese, cooked vegetables, shrimp, canned corn, and some individuals adore black bread.

Burmese cats are excellent mothers. Even being busy with their own kittens, Burmese cats will happily take care of any other kittens present in the house. Taking care of the offspring is a serious matter, and if there are more then one female Burmese in the house, they will all join forces in feeding and teaching the younglings (using a toilet, hunting, and other feline wisdom) with and enthusiasm.

Such care ensures that the kittens will grow up strong, cheerful and healthy, ready to bring joy to their owners.

Care:

There is no special care required for Burmese cats. With their short hair you won't need any grooming procedures. The only thing you need, is to protect Burmese cats from low temperatures. At a sub-zero temperatures Burmese cats change their coat colour.

Health:

Burmese cats have strong immune system, but they are prone to a few health issues. The most common disease - inherited cranial deformation (Deformity of the skull). Minor health issues are not worth mentioning, but it is worth noting: regular visits to a veterinarian for checkups will ensure that your Burmese cat will have a long healthy life.
